Chehalem Park and Recreation District is holding a public meeting on the Master Plan for Phase 1 of proposed Chehalem Heritage Trails. Public comments are welcome.

Phase One would develop approximately 20 miles of trail connecting Dundee and Newberg along Dayton Avenue, paralleling lower and middle Hess Creek, and linking the Willamette River waterfronts in Newberg and Dundee through pedestrian, bicycle, and multiuse trails.

This meeting will update the public on the progress of the Master Plan for Phase 1 (slated for completion in early 2011). This plan identifies the trail route, where easements will be needed across private property, plus preliminary engineering and cost estimates.

The Advisory Committee met four times and has concluded. Members include representatives from Dundee, Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon State Parks, George Fox University, and more.

Vigil-Agrimis, Inc., a Portland-based design firm that leads parks and trails projects, is leading a consultant team assisting CPRD with preliminary design for the proposed trail. Paul Agrimis is the project manager for the consultant team.

NEWBERG, Ore. - Chehalem Park and Recreation District’s Community School program is
proud to offer a course in Beginning Mandarin Chinese. Felix Loo says he is excited to offer this
course in the Newberg/Dundee area.

Loo says the timing is right to offer this course here because many residents travel to China on
business or work with Chinese speakers.

“My objective is to give people in the region the opportunity to learn Chinese,” said Loo.
Loo, born and raised in Taiwan, began speaking Mandarin as a child through immersion, as it is
the official dialect used by Chinese and Taiwan governments. He holds a M.A. in teaching and is
a licensed teacher for K-8 grades. He also holds a master’s degree in computer science. He is
also a “certified language interpreter” in the state of Washington, he says.

Loo taught Mandarin at Portland State University for 15 years. He teaches elementary grades
through the Community School program through the City of Lake Oswego, and has taught high
school as well.

“The Chinese language is very unique,” says Loo. It has a different sound, the characters are
written, and one syllable is pronounced at a time.

CPRD Dog Park Officially Open

NEWBERG, Ore. - The dog park at Ewing Young Historical Park will officially open Monday, Dec. 6. This latest Chehalem Park and Recreation District amenity features a fenced open area for dogs of all sizes.

The park is approximately two acres, split into two sections - one for large dogs and one for small and shy dogs. The fenced area is off-leash.

There are large oak logs to keep dogs interested and for owners to sit. Water is available. There is a station for waste collection materials and disposal.

The dog park will open from 7 a.m. to dusk. No other animals are permitted. A complete list of rules is posted, designed to keep this new park safe, clean and enjoyable for all.

Ewing Young Historical Park is located at 1201 South Blaine Street in Newberg (follow the railroad tracks). It is also home to famous Chehalem Skate Park, a BMX track and a disc golf course.

CPRD employee named OGA Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Phil Fribley, named Volunteer of the Year by the Oregon Golf Association for 2010.

When Phil is not working as marshall for Chehalem Glenn Golf Course, he donates his time assisting OGA conduct and run amateur golf tournaments around the state. Phil has been a volunteer for 16 years, traveling as far as Klamath Falls and Bend, working starters, maintaing pace of play, and marshaling for OGA tournaments.

"I enjoy being able to help out with the sport this way," he said.

Chehalem Glenn Golf Course supervisor Brandon Thompson said "We're proud of what Phil does and winning that award."

Next time you're out on the green, be sure to shake Phil's hand.

Chehalem Cultural Center recognized for construction excellence

The Chehalem Cultural Center won an honorable mention Northwest Construction magazine's Best of 2010 Awards.

The annual competition recognizes construction and design excellence in the three-state region that includes Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

An independent jury comprised of design and construction professionals arrived at 20 winning projects and three honorable mentions in categories such as Best Green Building and Best Transportation Project.

“The jury considered a variety of criteria for each project, from teamwork and safety to innovation and aesthetics,” says Scott Blair, senior editor of Northwest Construction. “This year’s group of 75 entries impressed the judges with their quality and variety.”

The winners will be profiled in detail in the December issue of Northwest Construction and onwww.northwest.construction.com. In addition, project teams will be honored during an awards ceremony breakfast at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront on Thursday, December 9.

CPRD Board to meet at Adult Enrichment Center

Proposed trail system gets a name

NEWBERG, OR -- Chehalem Heritage Trails - That's the official name of the proposed 77-mile trail system CPRD is working on. Monday night, Sept. 20th, ten members of the new advisory committee met to work on the first segment of the trail, which will connect Newberg and Dundee through Dayton Avenue and Hess Creek.

City administration from Newberg and Dundee, ODOT, Oregon State Parks, the Newberg School District, and Champoeg State Park were represented in the inaugural meeting. One thing they did was decide on the official name of the trail system itself. Discussion opened up on the theme and the names of the other trails included in the master plan. Public input is welcome - Should the trails be named on a historical theme, an agricultural theme, or something else?

Beyond identity, the committee examined the proposed trail alignments, discussed possible tie-ins with federal programs, and the objectives of the project. The next meeting will be a bus tour of the proposed trail route.

Soccer season opens Sept. 11

NEWBERG, Or. - Soccer is the most popular sport in our district, with 650 players. Saturday, Sept. 11, CPRD soccer fields at Renne and Jaquith parks will be packed with 46 games of nonstop soccer action. Come for all or part.

Extreme League plays the Jamboree. All others begin regular league play.

FIRST MEETING OF FOUR SCHEDULED FOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE REGARDING PROPOSED TRAIL SYSTEM CONNECTING NEWBERG TO DUNDEE

NEWBERG, Or. – Progress is being made toward making the proposed Chehalem Heritage Trail system a reality.

An advisory committee for the tentatively named Newberg-Dundee Connector segment of the proposed Chehalem Heritage Trail system is forming and its first meeting has been scheduled.

The first meeting of the advisory committee will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 at the Chehalem Park & Recreation District Office at 125 S. Elliott Road in Newberg. The number to the District Office is (503) 554-0283.

The proposed Chehalem Heritage Trail will be an outstanding continuous 70+ mile trail system connecting Newberg, Dundee and surrounding areas while preserving and enhancing the greater Chehalem Valley community parks, historic heritage, native habitats and open space. The purposes of the Advisory Committee will be

· To implement the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan;

· To refine the conceptual alignments of the tentatively named Newberg-Dundee Connection. This includes the first three segments of the Strategic Plan - Dayton Avenue, Hess Creek and the Willamette Riverfront.

· To address cultural site and restoration site choices.

This is the first of four meetings anticipated for this committee between now and January.

Volunteer completes mural in preschool courtyard

NEWBERG, Or. - Sherwood resident Allison Hamilton was recognized at the CPRD Board meeting Aug. 26 for the creation of a mural at CPRD's Bonnie Benedict Preschool. The colorful outdoor mural evokes a child's impression of a sunny meadow of wildflowers and trees, livening up the courtyard space where C.A.R.E. childcare and preschool children spend time each day.

Allison created the mural to earn the Girl Court Gold Award for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The 18-year-old managed the entire project, including securing paint donations from Sherwin Williams, conceptualizing the design and leading children in helping paint the mural (their handprints create the flowers).

Grant money allows Park & Rec children to participate in Tilikum outdoor obstacle course

NEWBERG, Ore. – Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, 23 Chehalem Park and Recreation District Summer Fest students will spend an afternoon on Tilikum Day Camp's Challenge Course at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 30^th.

Part of Tilikum Center for Outdoor Retreats and Ministries, the Challenge Course is a collection of ropes, cables, wooden beams, tires, and logs. Activities are geared for individual and group growth and discovery.

This special opportunity was made possible for CPRD students thanks to the generosity of sponsors Providence Newberg Medical Center and the George Fox University MAT Department. This is a $690.00 value.

Small Group Swim Lessons

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Chehalem Aquatic Center is currently taking registration for Small Group Session 4-B which begins July 26^th. With three children per class this one week (Monday – Friday) program has a great instructor to student ratio. Morning and evening lessons are available with each lesson being 30 minutes in length. Private Swim Lessons

Chehalem Aquatic Center is accepting new clients for private swim lessons. Private lessons are a one on one teaching format and lesson structure is modified to meet each clients needs. Blaine Street Paved to Ewing Young CPRD Park

NEWBERG, Ore. -- CPRD paved Blaine Street from West 9th to the entrance of the Dog Park on Thursday, July 15th, smoothing the way for travelers to Ewing Young Historical CPRD Park, home of the 12-hole Disc Golf course, Bicycle Motorcross (BMX) Track, skate park, and the future dog park, which is being built at the entrance to the park.

The District has long wanted to do this in order to reduce dust raising during dry months and make a safer, more pleasant trip to the park. Because the park is frequented by bicyclists and skateboarders, this will benefit them as well as automobile drivers.

Crater Fields Concession Stand/Restroom dedication ceremony & BBQ

NEWBERG, Ore. -- A belated formal dedication ceremony will be held for the concessions and restroom building at Crater fields on the Darnell Wright Sports Complex in Newberg at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010 on field #3.

The dedication plaque will be unveiled, permanently affixed to the outside wall of the building.

This facility was constructed largely by volunteers who donated their time, labor and professional expertise. The cost for the building was approximately $74,291 for materials, permits, and engineering. To build this building today without donations would likely exceed $200,000.

The building opened for business in September, 2009. Until that time, a trailer and portable restrooms served during the games.

The ceremony June 17th will be brief. Board member Mike Ragsdale and Park Supervisor will make remarks, thank the volunteers, and a barbeque will be provided for all who attend, including news media. A pitching machine will be on hand for folks to take some swings. There will be regularly scheduled softball games going on in other fields.
